The most iconic image of Naxos — a massive marble doorway standing alone on a small islet connected to the harbor by a causeway. It's the only surviving remnant of an unfinished temple to Apollo from the 6th century BC. At sunset the Portara is silhouetted against the sky in one of the most beautiful images in the Aegean. Walking out to it as the sun goes down is a magical experience.

2. Naxos Town (Chora) and the Kastro

Naxos Town is one of the most charming island capitals in Greece — a maze of whitewashed alleys, Venetian towers, Byzantine churches and excellent restaurants climbing up to the medieval Kastro at the top. The Kastro was built by the Venetian Marco Sanudo in the 13th century and is still inhabited today — a living medieval village within a village. The views from the Kastro walls over the Aegean are spectacular.

The water is shallow and calm — perfect for families. Well organized with good facilities but never as crowded as the beaches of Mykonos.

4. Plaka beach — the wild beach

Plaka is a 5km stretch of white sand dunes and crystal clear water that extends south of Agia Anna — one of the longest and most beautiful beaches in the Cyclades. 5. The mountain villages — Halki, Filoti and Apeiranthos

Filoti sits beneath Mount Zeus (the highest peak in the Cyclades) and has the most authentic tavernas on the island.

6. Temple of Demeter — Sangri

One of the best preserved ancient temples in the Cyclades — a beautifully restored 6th century BC temple to Demeter set in an olive grove in the Naxian countryside. • By plane: Naxos Airport (JNX) has connections to Athens (45 minutes) with Olympic Air. Small airport — book early.

• May – June: Perfect — warm, uncrowded, lush green mountains. Best overall.
• July – August: Peak season — busy but never as crowded as Mykonos or Santorini. Strong Meltemi winds can make the west coast beaches choppy.
